The pressure ramp

One continuous band from nothing to full dark, using pressure alone. Ten a day for a week.

Your hand needs to learn to dial pressure like a volume knob, smoothly, without steps. The drill: a 2B on its side, a band about an inch tall and eight inches long, starting with a touch so light it barely marks and ending with the full weight of the hand. No bands, no sudden jumps, no going back to patch.

Then do it in reverse, dark to light. Then do it with a 6B and notice how much less pressure the dark end needs. Then do it with a 2H and notice that the dark end never arrives, which is the point of the pencil-grades lesson.

This drill builds the control that every gradient, every sky and every turning form depends on. It is boring. Do it anyway, as a warm-up, every session, for the first month.

Pitfalls

What

Steps in the ramp.

Why

Pressure changed in jumps because you were thinking about it in stages.

Fix

Count slowly to eight as you travel and let the pressure rise with the count.
