Line + MassNegative shapes
Draw the sky between the branches, the gap between the pinnacles. Your brain has a symbol for a branch; it has none for the gap, so it looks.
When you draw a branch, your brain supplies a symbol: a stick, roughly straight, roughly the thickness branches are. When you draw the piece of sky between two branches, the brain has no symbol for that shape, so it has to look at it, and it draws it accurately. Then the branches around it come out right as a by-product. This is negative-shape drawing, and it is the most reliable way to place complicated things correctly.
Use it for tree silhouettes against sky, for the gaps in a Gothic arcade, for the shapes of sky between pinnacles and chimneys, and for the space between a tower and the hill behind it. Prout placed every spire by the shape of sky beside it.
The drill: draw a winter tree by drawing only the sky holes, shading each one, and never once drawing a branch. The tree appears.

Prout, Rath Haus, Ulm. Look at the shapes of sky between the gables, turrets and spire. Those shapes were drawn as carefully as the stone.

Pitfalls
What
Drawing the positive object and then shading around it.
Why
The symbol has already been drawn; the negative shape is now just filler.
Fix
Start with the negative shape and let the object be what is left over.
